Rationale

The topic that I chose to do my brochure on was “Photography Spots around Wellington.” I chose this because it is something that I am quite interested in and that it would have lots of creative room. Each of the spots that I chose for the brochure were vastly different from one another. The Waterfront is a very open space with lots of room to move around, and doesn’t require much attention to detail as landscape shots are generally the photos that are taken. The Botanical Gardens is different in that it is a lot more refined photography as you need to get close up to the subject. And finally, Central Park is different again as the thick tree coverage provides a darker lighting, which creates rather ominous photos. To achieve these feelings I used different colours, but most importantly I used tangibles relating to the subject that help achieve these photos. If I were to do this project again, I would use a larger variety of design styles, as that may achieve more appealing design.

I am now in the last stretch of making my brochure. I have nearly completed the brochure itself, and the only things left me to do on it are to do with the type. After that I need to complete my book work and write my rationale and then I will be ready for the presentation on Thursday. I have decided not to get my brochure professionally printed as I am happy with how it has come out on normal paper.

I have managed to find a way to fill the negative space on the page without it being to crowded on the page. Now that I have a somewhat solid final product I am able to tweak little parts of my brochure in order to have a brochure that is to the highest standard I can achieve.

Progress has been made. Since I had last been both mentally and emotionally destroyed by my tutor and work, I now have a design style that is reflecting my subject well and so I have something to work with. I am making some more tweaks to my work, trying to get it to a place where I am fairly confident. There is still quite a decent chunk of negative space on a few of the pages, so I am trying to think up ideas of how to fill that.

So last the past week was interesting. The Monday session had us designing thumbnail layouts which would turn out to be the most successful thing of my week. I had what I thought would be vision that I would run with until the end of my project, however I was wrong. I had pretty much designed a layout that I wasn't completely happy with, but I thought it had potential. Again I was wrong. I was informed that my designs did not completely reflect the subject that I was going for, which I could see once it was pointed out to me. So after that class I knew I had to revamp my designs and get it to the standard that I thought was a good foundation to build. So fast forward to 5:30 Monday morning, I had stayed up working hard on my designs getting them to that level and ready for interim presentation that morning. An hour and a half later I woke up and got ready to go to class. Oh how naive I was to think that things would go my way. Once I had received some feedback on my work, I felt like I was in a good place to continue building from the point I was at. However, at approximately 11:03 one of my tutors told me that I needed to strip back my designs and rethink how I reflected this activity. So in essence I am currently in a rather difficult place, but hey, only can go up from here.

During the studio we had to draw parts of one of our destinations with a variety of different medias at a variety of speeds from a variety of angles which helped with constructing collages and other forms of media.

I have been trying to explore different styles of design, as I normally focus on a minimalist style, but am trying to branch out into busier pieces.
